Bat Koun Veng (Spinning Elbow)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The spinning elbow is perhaps the most spectacular technique in Kun Khmer, generating devastating power through full-body rotation. When it lands cleanly, it is one of the most fight-ending strikes in all of combat sports. It carries significant risk, as a miss leaves the fighter momentarily off-balance and exposed.

Steps

  1. From your fighting stance, begin rotating your lead foot and torso away from the opponent, turning your back.
  2. As you spin, spot your target over the shoulder and keep the striking elbow tight and at head height.
  3. Complete the rotation, extending the elbow into the target at the moment you face the opponent again, using the full rotational force.
  4. Continue spinning to return to your stance or immediately enter the clinch after landing.

Key Points

  • Speed is critical — the rotation must be fast enough that the opponent cannot react. A slow spin will be easily countered.
  • Keep the elbow tight to the body during the spin and extend it only at the point of impact.
  • Set it up with other strikes to disguise the rotation. Throwing it in isolation makes it predictable.

Common Mistakes

  • Spinning too slowly, allowing the opponent to step back or counter during the rotation.
  • Losing balance during the spin due to poor foot placement or over-rotation.
  • Extending the elbow too early in the rotation, losing the whipping power at the point of impact.

Targets

  • Temple
  • Jaw
  • Behind the ear
  • Cheekbone
