Bat Koun Kroam (Reverse Horizontal Elbow)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The reverse horizontal elbow travels backward in a horizontal arc, catching opponents who are circling or moving forward into the strike. It is an unconventional technique that surprises opponents who are accustomed to defending forward-traveling elbows.

Steps

  1. From close range, rotate the torso away from the opponent as if turning to defend or disengage.
  2. Whip the elbow backward in a horizontal arc at head height, driving through with the point of the elbow.
  3. Use the counter-rotation of the hips and torso to generate power in the reverse direction.
  4. Complete the motion and return to your guard, maintaining balance throughout.

Key Points

  • This technique works best when the opponent is pressing forward or circling into the elbow.
  • The reverse direction makes it extremely difficult to see coming, especially in close-range exchanges.
  • It can be combined with defensive movement — the initial turn away from the opponent disguises the strike as evasion.

Common Mistakes

  • Turning too far before striking, losing the element of surprise and telegraphing the technique.
  • Striking with the back of the arm rather than the point of the elbow.
  • Throwing at too great a distance, where the technique has no power or reach.
