Bat Koun Phloh (Spear Elbow)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The spear elbow is a thrusting technique delivered straight forward using the point of the elbow, targeting the face or sternum. Unlike other elbows that use arcing motions, the spear elbow drives directly into the target like a lance, making it effective in very tight spaces.

Steps

  1. From extremely close range, position the striking arm with the elbow pointing directly at the target.
  2. Drive forward with a pushing motion from the rear leg, thrusting the point of the elbow straight into the target.
  3. Keep the forearm tight against the upper arm to maintain a sharp point at the elbow.
  4. Push through the target and immediately return to clinch control or guard position.

Key Points

  • This is a close-range weapon, most effective when you are already in the clinch or at very close range.
  • The straight-line trajectory makes it difficult to see coming in the chaos of close-range exchanges.
  • Drive through the target rather than just touching it — the power comes from the legs and forward drive.

Common Mistakes

  • Opening the arm angle, which turns it into a push rather than a pointed elbow strike.
  • Trying to throw it from too far away, where it has no power and is easy to avoid.
  • Not driving through the target, resulting in a glancing blow rather than a penetrating strike.
