Bat Koun Bong Venh (Uppercut Elbow)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The uppercut elbow travels in an upward arc, targeting the chin and jaw from below. It is devastatingly effective in close-range exchanges, particularly when the opponent drops their head or ducks to avoid horizontal elbows or hooks.
Steps
- From close range, drop the striking shoulder and elbow slightly below the target level.
- Drive upward through the legs while rotating the hip, bringing the elbow up in a vertical arc.
- Strike with the point of the elbow under the chin or into the jaw, driving through the target.
- Continue the upward arc and return to your high guard immediately.
Key Points
- The uppercut elbow is most effective from extreme close range, making it ideal for clinch transitions.
- Generate power from the legs and hips driving upward, not just from the arm.
- Time it when the opponent drops their head — the technique is much less effective against an upright opponent.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping the hand too low before striking, telegraphing the upward trajectory.
- Striking with the forearm instead of the point of the elbow.
- Leaning back while throwing, which sacrifices power and takes you off balance.
Targets
- Chin
- Jaw
- Throat (in self-defense only)
- Solar plexus
