Bat Koun Choh (Downward/Slashing Elbow)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The downward or slashing elbow is one of the most dangerous techniques in Kun Khmer, delivered in a downward chopping motion that is extremely effective at opening cuts on the forehead, eyebrows, and scalp. It is a signature technique of Khmer boxing.
Steps
- Raise the striking arm above your head, keeping the forearm folded tight with the elbow pointing upward.
- Drive the elbow downward in a sharp diagonal or vertical arc, using gravity and body weight to add force.
- Drop your weight slightly as you strike, sinking the hips to add downward power to the technique.
- Cut through the target and return to guard, being prepared for the opponent to clinch or counter.
Key Points
- This elbow is most effective when you are taller than your opponent or when they are ducking or bending forward.
- Adding a small step forward while striking increases power and helps close the distance.
- The slashing angle (diagonal) is more effective at opening cuts than a purely vertical motion.
Common Mistakes
- Raising the arm too high and too slowly, giving the opponent time to see the strike coming.
- Striking straight down on top of the skull, which can injure the elbow on the hard bone.
- Not closing distance enough, causing the elbow to miss or land with only the forearm.
Targets
- Forehead
- Crown of head
- Eyebrow ridge
- Bridge of nose
- Collarbone
