Bat Koun Leut (Rising Diagonal Elbow)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The rising diagonal elbow strikes upward at an angle, combining the properties of the horizontal and uppercut elbows. It is an excellent counter-strike and one of the most versatile elbow techniques in Kun Khmer.
Steps
- From your guard, drop the striking hand slightly while keeping the elbow tight to the body.
- Drive upward at a 45-degree angle, rotating the hips and rising slightly on the toes for additional lift.
- Strike with the point of the elbow along the diagonal line, targeting the chin, cheek, or temple.
- Continue through the target and recover your guard, ready for follow-up techniques.
Key Points
- The 45-degree angle makes this elbow difficult for opponents to predict — it does not travel horizontally or vertically.
- It works well as a counter-strike when an opponent throws a jab or leans forward.
- The diagonal angle is particularly effective at splitting the guard between high and low coverage.
Common Mistakes
- Making the angle too steep (like an uppercut) or too flat (like a horizontal), losing the diagonal advantage.
- Not rotating the hips into the strike, relying on arm power alone.
- Throwing from too far away, missing the target or connecting with the forearm.
Targets
- Chin
- Cheek
- Temple
- Jaw
