Pea Reak Sa (High Guard Block)
Difficulty: BeginnerDefense
The high guard is the fundamental defensive posture in Kun Khmer, protecting the head and face from strikes by keeping both hands high and the arms tight. It is the default position from which all other defensive and offensive techniques begin.
Steps
- Raise both hands to the level of your temples, with the fists lightly clenched or open.
- Keep the elbows pointed down and tight to the body, protecting the ribs and solar plexus.
- Tuck the chin down behind the lead shoulder, minimizing the target area for the opponent.
- Maintain this position throughout defensive situations, absorbing strikes on the forearms and gloves.
Key Points
- The guard must be maintained constantly — dropping the hands even for a moment invites devastating elbows or kicks.
- Stay relaxed in the guard position to conserve energy; tense arms tire quickly.
- Use small adjustments to redirect incoming strikes rather than trying to meet them with force.
Common Mistakes
- Holding the hands too far from the face, creating a gap that elbows and hooks can slip through.
- Spreading the elbows wide, exposing the body to straight knees and body kicks.
- Tensing up the entire body in the guard, which causes rapid fatigue and slow reactions.
Targets
- Defensive position for protecting head, face, and upper body
