Dong (Kick Catch)
Difficulty: IntermediateDefense
Catching the opponent's kick is a fundamental defensive technique in Kun Khmer that turns a defensive action into an offensive opportunity. By catching and controlling the opponent's leg, you can deliver counter-strikes, execute sweeps, or throw the opponent off-balance.
Steps
- As the opponent throws a roundhouse kick, step slightly to the side and absorb the kick against your body with the lead arm.
- Wrap the arm around the opponent's leg, trapping the shin or ankle against your body.
- Immediately counter with a straight punch, elbow, or sweep the opponent's standing leg.
- Release the leg and disengage, or maintain control to deliver additional strikes.
Key Points
- Catching requires timing — you must read the kick early and position your body to absorb it safely.
- Once you have the leg, act immediately. Holding the leg without striking allows the opponent to recover or hop-punch.
- Step to the side as you catch to reduce the impact of the kick and improve your angle for counters.
Common Mistakes
- Reaching out for the leg, which puts you off-balance and leaves you exposed to feints.
- Holding the leg too long without countering, giving the opponent time to adjust and counter.
- Not absorbing the kick properly, taking full impact before managing to trap the leg.
Targets
- Counter opportunity: sweeps, elbows, punches against caught opponent
