Shin Check (Kick Block)
Difficulty: BeginnerDefense
The shin check is the primary defense against low and body kicks in Kun Khmer. By raising the shin to intercept the incoming kick, you block the attack with the hardest bone in the lower leg, which can damage the opponent's kicking leg over time.
Steps
- As the opponent initiates a roundhouse kick, quickly lift the lead knee up and outward.
- Turn the shin slightly outward to present it as a shield, with the foot pointing down and away.
- Absorb the impact on the upper shin bone, keeping the arms in guard position throughout.
- Return the foot to the ground immediately and reset your stance.
Key Points
- React early — the check must be in position before the kick arrives at full speed.
- Angle the shin slightly outward to ensure the kick meets bone, not soft tissue.
- Maintain upper body guard during the check; do not reach down or drop the hands.
Common Mistakes
- Raising the check too late, taking the kick on the thigh instead of the shin.
- Lifting the knee straight up without angling the shin, reducing coverage and effectiveness.
- Dropping the hands to help balance, leaving the head exposed to follow-up strikes.
Targets
- Defensive technique against low kicks, body kicks, and leg attacks
