Boak Khnong (Clinch Throw/Sweep)
Difficulty: IntermediateClinch Work
Clinch throws and sweeps are used to dump the opponent to the ground from the clinch, scoring points, demoralizing the opponent, and potentially causing damage on impact. Throws are highly valued in Kun Khmer scoring and demonstrate clinch dominance.
Steps
- From a clinch position, establish control of the opponent's head and one arm.
- Step your lead foot to the outside of the opponent's lead foot, turning your hip into their body.
- Use a combination of pulling their head down, pushing with your hip, and sweeping their lead foot to off-balance them.
- Follow through the throw, maintaining control as they fall, and step back to ready position.
Key Points
- Timing is critical — throws work best when the opponent is moving or off-balance, not when they are stable.
- Use their momentum against them; if they push forward, redirect them past you with a sweep.
- Maintain head control throughout the throw to protect yourself and ensure clean execution.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to muscle the throw rather than using timing and leverage, which wastes energy against resisting opponents.
- Falling to the ground yourself during the throw, which negates any scoring advantage.
- Releasing control after the throw instead of maintaining position, allowing the opponent to recover and counter.
Targets
- Off-balancing for trips, sweeps, and hip throws from clinch
