Chap Kor Muay (Single Collar Tie)

Difficulty: IntermediateClinch Work

The single collar tie controls the opponent's head with one hand while the other controls their arm, creating opportunities for a wider variety of strikes and sweeps than the double collar tie. It is a versatile clinch position that allows both offense and defense.

Steps

  1. From clinch range, place one hand behind the opponent's head and grip the back of the neck firmly.
  2. Use the other hand to control the opponent's bicep, wrist, or elbow on the opposite side.
  3. Use the head control to pull the opponent off-balance while using the arm control to limit their strikes.
  4. Deliver knees, elbows, or set up sweeps and throws from this asymmetric control position.

Key Points

  • The single collar tie allows you to strike with the arm-control side while maintaining head control with the other.
  • It is the gateway to sweeps and throws because you can manipulate the opponent's balance asymmetrically.
  • Constantly fight for the dominant hand position — the hand on the neck is the controlling hand.

Common Mistakes

  • Gripping too loosely on the neck, allowing the opponent to posture up and break free.
  • Neglecting the arm-control hand, which allows the opponent to throw elbows freely.
  • Becoming passive in the clinch — the single collar tie requires constant activity to be effective.

Targets

  • Head control for knees and elbows; arm control for sweeps and positioning
