Dar Song (Backfist)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The backfist is an unorthodox whipping strike using the back of the fist, delivered with a snapping motion. In Kun Khmer, it is used as a surprise technique to catch opponents off guard, often thrown as part of spinning combinations or from unusual angles.

Steps

  1. From your stance, begin rotating the torso away from the opponent as if winding up for a spinning technique.
  2. Whip the striking arm outward in a horizontal or downward arc, extending the arm and striking with the back of the fist.
  3. Snap the wrist at the moment of impact to maximize the whipping force of the strike.
  4. Continue the rotation back to your guard position, ready for follow-up strikes.

Key Points

  • The backfist relies on speed and surprise rather than raw power — timing is everything.
  • It is most effective when set up by a feint or combination that draws the opponent's guard to one side.
  • Practice the spinning version extensively before using it in sparring, as missing leaves you very exposed.

Common Mistakes

  • Telegraphing the technique by winding up too obviously or too slowly.
  • Striking with the fingers rather than the back of the fist, risking hand injury.
  • Using the backfist too frequently, allowing opponents to anticipate and counter it.
