Dar Khorl (Hook)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The hook is a powerful curved punch that attacks from the side, targeting the jaw, temple, or body. In Kun Khmer, hooks are frequently used at close range to set up elbow strikes or as counter-punches when opponents circle into the strike.
Steps
- From your stance, begin rotating the lead hip and torso while keeping the arm bent at approximately 90 degrees.
- Drive the punch in a horizontal arc, keeping the elbow at shoulder height and the fist vertical or palm-down.
- Pivot on the lead foot to generate rotational power, turning the whole body into the strike.
- Follow through slightly past the target and immediately return to your guard.
Key Points
- The arm maintains a fixed 90-degree angle — the power comes from body rotation, not arm extension.
- Keep the elbow at the same height as the fist to ensure the strike connects with proper alignment.
- The non-striking hand stays pressed against the chin for protection.
Common Mistakes
- Winding up by pulling the arm back before throwing, which telegraphs the punch badly.
- Letting the elbow drop below the fist, turning the hook into a less effective looping punch.
- Over-rotating and ending up off-balance, vulnerable to counter-attacks.
Targets
- Jaw
- Temple
- Ear
- Liver
- Floating ribs
