Dar Mat (Jab)
Difficulty: BeginnerAll Strikes
The jab is the most fundamental punch in Kun Khmer, used to measure distance, set up combinations, and keep the opponent at bay. While punches are not the primary scoring weapons in Kun Khmer, the jab is essential for controlling the pace of a fight and creating openings for more damaging strikes like elbows and knees.
Steps
- Begin in your fighting stance with hands up protecting the chin, weight slightly forward on the lead leg.
- Extend the lead hand straight toward the target, rotating the fist so the palm faces down at full extension.
- Keep the rear hand tight against the chin for protection throughout the technique.
- Snap the hand back to the guard position immediately after making contact, returning to your stance.
Key Points
- The power comes from a slight push off the lead foot and extension of the shoulder, not from winding up.
- Keep the chin tucked behind the lead shoulder during the extension for protection.
- The jab should be the fastest strike in your arsenal — prioritize speed over power.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping the rear hand while jabbing, leaving the chin exposed to counter-strikes.
- Telegraphing the jab by pulling the hand back before throwing, giving the opponent time to react.
- Overcommitting weight forward, which compromises balance and makes it difficult to follow up or defend.
Targets
- Face
- Nose
- Chin
- Body (solar plexus)
