Dar Chong (Cross)
Difficulty: BeginnerAll Strikes
The cross is a powerful straight punch delivered with the rear hand, generating force through hip rotation and weight transfer. In Kun Khmer, the cross is often used to stun opponents and create openings for follow-up elbows or clinch entries.
Steps
- From your fighting stance, begin rotating the rear hip forward while driving off the ball of the rear foot.
- Extend the rear hand straight toward the target, rotating the fist palm-down and letting the shoulder come through.
- Allow the rear heel to pivot, turning the body fully into the punch for maximum power transfer.
- Immediately return the hand to the guard position and reset your stance.
Key Points
- Power is generated from the ground up through the legs, hips, and torso — not just the arm.
- The punch travels in a straight line, with the shoulder protecting the chin at full extension.
- Exhale sharply on contact to engage the core and maximize power.
Common Mistakes
- Winding up or looping the punch, which telegraphs the strike and reduces accuracy.
- Failing to rotate the hips, resulting in an arm punch with significantly less power.
- Leaving the lead hand down during the cross, exposing the chin to counter-hooks.
Targets
- Chin
- Jaw
- Temple
- Solar plexus
- Liver
