Bok Chong Khang (Side Knee)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The side knee is delivered laterally into the opponent's thigh, hip, or ribs. It is a tactical weapon used primarily in the clinch to sap the opponent's leg strength, damage the body, and weaken their base for throws and sweeps.
Steps
- From clinch position, establish control with at least one hand on the opponent's head or arm.
- Turn the hip outward and raise the knee to the side, keeping the shin parallel to the ground.
- Drive the knee laterally into the opponent's thigh, hip, or ribcage with a snapping motion.
- Return the foot to the ground quickly and re-establish your base and clinch position.
Key Points
- The side knee targets areas that are difficult to protect in the clinch, especially the thigh and hip.
- Use it repeatedly to accumulate damage to the opponent's legs, slowing their movement over the fight.
- It is a lower-risk technique than straight or flying knees, making it suitable for consistent use.
Common Mistakes
- Not turning the hip enough, which reduces the lateral trajectory and turns it into a weak straight knee.
- Aiming too low and hitting the opponent's knee, risking injury to your own knee.
- Neglecting to maintain clinch control, allowing the opponent to escape during the technique.
Targets
- Outer thigh
- Hip
- Floating ribs
- Side of body
