Bok Chong Kurng (Curving Knee)
Difficulty: IntermediateAll Strikes
The curving knee strike travels in an arc from the side, targeting the ribs and midsection by going around the opponent's guard. When straight knees are being blocked effectively, the curving knee attacks from a different angle that is much harder to defend.
Steps
- From clinch position, control the opponent's head or upper body with at least one hand.
- Open the hip on the striking side, turning the knee outward slightly.
- Drive the knee upward and inward in a curving arc, striking the ribs or side of the body with the inner part of the knee.
- Twist the hip through the target for maximum penetration, then return to your base.
Key Points
- The curve of the knee bypasses the elbows that typically block straight knee strikes to the body.
- Rotate the hip fully into the strike to generate power through the curved trajectory.
- It works best in combination with straight knees — throw straight knees to draw the guard, then curve around it.
Common Mistakes
- Making the arc too wide, which reduces power and gives the opponent time to adjust.
- Failing to turn the hip into the strike, resulting in a weak, slapping contact.
- Losing balance by leaning too far to the opposite side while throwing the curving knee.
Targets
- Floating ribs
- Liver
- Spleen area
- Side of torso
- Hip
