Keng Veng (Spinning Back Kick)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The spinning back kick generates enormous power through full body rotation, driving the heel into the opponent's midsection or head. It is one of the most powerful techniques in Kun Khmer but carries significant risk if it misses.

Steps

  1. Begin rotating on the lead foot, turning your back toward the opponent while looking over the rear shoulder to spot the target.
  2. As you spin, chamber the kicking leg and drive the heel straight back toward the target in a thrusting motion.
  3. Make contact with the heel, driving through the target with the full force of the spin.
  4. Complete the rotation to return to your stance, or if the kick lands cleanly, follow up immediately.

Key Points

  • Keep your eyes on the target throughout — look over your shoulder as you spin to maintain accuracy.
  • The kick is a thrust, not a swing; the heel drives straight back into the target.
  • Timing and setup are everything. Use it when the opponent is advancing or after a combination that draws their attention elsewhere.

Common Mistakes

  • Losing sight of the target during the spin, resulting in the kick missing completely.
  • Swinging the leg in a wide arc rather than thrusting straight back, reducing power and speed.
  • Using the technique too frequently, allowing opponents to time the spin and counter.

Targets

  • Solar plexus
  • Liver
  • Sternum
  • Face
  • Ribs
