Keng Lot (Jump Kick)

Difficulty: AdvancedAll Strikes

The jump kick is an airborne roundhouse or straight kick launched from a leaping position. It adds the force of the jump to the kick and attacks from unexpected angles, making it a spectacular finishing technique.

Steps

  1. Take a short step forward to build momentum, then launch off both feet or the lead foot.
  2. At the peak of the jump, execute a roundhouse kick motion, driving the shin into the target.
  3. Use the downward momentum of the jump to add power to the kick as you descend.
  4. Land on both feet in a balanced stance, ready to follow up or defend.

Key Points

  • Jump kicks work best as a surprise element — use them sparingly and at unexpected moments.
  • The jump should be forward and into the opponent, not straight up, which wastes energy.
  • Land in a strong stance — the vulnerability after a jump kick is the moment of landing.

Common Mistakes

  • Jumping too high and too far, telegraphing the technique and landing off-balance.
  • Not committing to the kick in the air, resulting in a weak technique that fails to land properly.
  • Using jump kicks repeatedly, making them predictable and easy to counter.
