Keng Kraom (Low Kick)

Difficulty: BeginnerAll Strikes

The low kick targets the opponent's thigh or calf, designed to damage the legs, compromise balance, and limit mobility over the course of a fight. It is one of the safest and most effective techniques in Kun Khmer when used consistently.

Steps

  1. From your stance, take a small step outward with the lead foot to create the angle for the kick.
  2. Execute a tight roundhouse kick aimed at the opponent's outer thigh (lead or rear leg), keeping the arc low.
  3. Strike with the lower shin, driving through the target with full hip rotation.
  4. Return the kicking leg quickly to your stance, staying in balance and ready to defend.

Key Points

  • Consistency is key — one low kick does little, but accumulating them over rounds degrades the opponent's movement and power.
  • Keep the kick low and tight to minimize the time you are on one leg and vulnerable to sweeps.
  • The outer thigh and the calf just above the ankle are the most effective targets.

Common Mistakes

  • Kicking the knee, which is illegal in most competition settings and can cause serious injury.
  • Throwing lazy, slow low kicks that are easily checked by the opponent lifting their shin.
  • Not returning to stance quickly enough, allowing the opponent to counter while you are still on one leg.

Targets

  • Outer thigh
  • Inner thigh
  • Calf
  • Behind the knee (illegal in competition)
