Biography

Phuong Sophoan is widely regarded as the most complete Kun Khmer fighter of his generation, equally skilled in all aspects of the Khmer striking arts. Born in Phnom Penh, he was one of the first Cambodian fighters to train systematically using modern sports science methods while maintaining deep roots in traditional technique. His dominance of the national middleweight division for five consecutive years remains unmatched, and his back-to-back SEA Games gold medals cemented his status as a national hero. Sophoan was also among the first Cambodian fighters to successfully compete under international Muay Thai rules, winning the WBC Muay Thai Asian title in 2008. His ability to adapt Kun Khmer techniques to different rulesets helped raise the international profile of Cambodian striking arts.

Fighting Style

Sophoan was the complete fighter his nickname suggests, with no significant weaknesses in any range. He used a long, rangy teep kick to control distance, sharp boxing at mid-range, and devastating elbows and knees in the clinch. His fight IQ was exceptionally high, allowing him to adjust his strategy round by round and exploit whatever openings his opponents presented.
